The Newfield Town Board started the new year with a bang, when Councilwoman Casey Powers introduced the subject of a resolution banning waste transfer stations in the Town of Newfield. With little discussion or comment, at its Jan. 8 meeting the board unanimously voted to set a Thursday, Feb. 12 public hearing for the proposed law. If it passes, it would bring an end to Alternative Waste Services’s quest to build a waste transfer station at the current Bishop Road facility.
In an interview on the morning of Jan. 9, Alternative Waste Services (AWS) owner Bob Mente revealed that on Jan. 6 he received the long-awaited waste transfer station permit from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Mente said, "On Jan 6th of 2015 the DEC granted us a permit number 7-5034-00108/0001 Solid Waste ID 55T03. That is a working permit from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation stating that we can open a facility here."
