The city of Sun Prairie, Wis. is making moves to reach its sustainability goals as the city has installed new recycling initiatives for niche items.

To coincide with April being Earth Day month, the city has set up a series of recycling bins for products that can’t be tossed into a standard curbside recycling bin. The new bins installed in government buildings can accept items like razors, used socks, toothbrushes and toothpaste, makeup, and writing utensils.

Dr. Rose Daily, Sun Prairie Sustainability Coordinator says the city can operate the new bins at no cost because more companies have been incorporating recycling into their business practices.

In addition, city staff was alerted that paper towels thrown into designated bins in restrooms at certain locations will be taken for composting through a partnership with Green Box, a Sun Prairie composting business.
