PPE Litter Can Be Deadly to Wildlife

 

Personal protective equipment (PPE) has been a lifesaver during the pandemic. However, wildlife is being harmed or killed by gloves and masks.

In the Dutch city of Leiden, two volunteers have uncovered reports of robins, seagulls, penguins and hedgehogs trapped in face mask ear loops, which can impair their movement and make them vulnerable to predation. Birds are also using masks, gloves and packaging from pocket tissues to build their nests, items that their young could ingest or get tangled in.
