NYC Looks at Waste Disposal Options, Again

New York -- Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is taking another look at the Big Apple’s solid waste disposal options. In July 2002, the mayor announced plans to rebuild eight marine transfer stations. But because of the stations’ unexpected additional costs and time needed to construct the facilities, the mayor is open to other ideas, according to aNew York Timesarticle.

Bloomberg already has plans to hire a consultant to explore the city’s long-term options. Also, private contractors and waste businesses will be allowed to build barge or rail sites in the city at a cost lower than marine transfer stations. The complication of what to do with New York’s trash has concerned several of the city’s mayors, and it’s Bloomberg’s turn, again.
