Walmart Delivers on Promise, Replaces Plastic Mailers with Paper Envelopes

Sticking with its pledge from June 2023, Walmart has phased out single-use plastic for mailing and has shifted to recyclable paper.

Sticking with its pledge from June 2023, Walmart has phased out single-use plastic for mailing and has shifted to recyclable paper.

The massive retailer notes that the change has already affected nearly 65 million bags mailed annually in the United States, cutting almost 2,000 tons of plastic. Walmart is attempting to cut down on excess packaging and move away from plastic where it can. The change to using paper mailers didn’t require any process or equipment changes.

The change impacts Walmart orders as well as sellers on Walmart’s online marketplace that are fulfilled through Walmart’s delivery services. In addition, Walmart allows customers to opt out of plastic bags when doing in-store pickup, packing customer’s orders in paper bags instead.
