The UK government has delayed its bottle recycling scheme again, citing issues and disagreements with UK regional administrations.

The delay pushes the bottle recycling scheme back to at least 2027 after it was initially proposed back in 2018. The recycling scheme would see small amounts of cash being paid out to those who recycle plastic bottles or used cans.

“Launching a deposit return scheme (DRS) in October 2025 was a stretching target date,” said Robbie Moore, environmental minister.

“Following extensive engagement with industry, who will be responsible for delivering the DRS, and a review of international approaches to DRS implementation, additional time will be needed to efficiently and effectively roll out the schemes across the UK.”

Disagreements stem from nuances on the program, including the Scottish administration pushing for glass to be added to the recycling scheme.
