Repurpose It, Victoria, Australia’s four-bin waste recycling program, is getting a $1 million grant to expand its food and organics processing capacity.

The grant comes from Victoria’s government and will allow Repurpose It to expand its efforts to process food and organics at its facility in Epping. The Epping facility is already the largest organics processing facility in Australia, able to convert 200,000 tonnes of organic waste into 1 million cubic meters of high-quality landscaping materials each year.

The expansion will cost $4.4 million in total but will help the facility filter out problematic items commonly found in curbside food waste and organic bins.

“About one-third of a household rubbish bin is food waste – that’s why we’re helping innovative businesses like Repurpose It expand their operations, ensuring our organic waste is being turned into something new and useful,” said Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos.
