Polystyvert, a Montreal-based clean technology company, is opening the first full-scale commercial polystyrene recycling plant in Greater Montreal, Canada.

Polystyrene is one of the most widely used plastics across all kinds of different industries and the new facility opening in Montreal will be capable of recycling the equivalent of 15% of the polystyrene that is buried in Quebec each year.

The facility is moving forward with an investment of $40M plus additional funding from two blue-chip partners associated with the polystyrene industry. Those partners will also help with supplying raw materials and will help sell Polystyvert’s recycled polystyrene.

The facility will be able to recycle almost 10,000 tons of both post-consumer and post-industrial polystyrene waste each year.

“After several successful development phases, our technology has reached maturity. We can now recycle contaminated waste with no other outlet than landfill sites,” said Polystyvert president Nathalie Morin.

“This plant is the first of many that can be built worldwide by replicating what will be done in Greater Montreal, thereby multiplying the economic and environmental benefits of the project.”
