A Pennsylvania-based business that received South Carolina economic incentives to open its Barnwell County facility was storing hazardous waste without a permit and must now apply for one from state regulators.
The public has until June 1 to send state regulators comments or concerns about the proposed permit.
When Horsehead Corporation began operations in 2010, it didn’t need the permit because the hazardous waste was supposed to go into its recycling operation within 48 hours of arriving, said Cassandra Harris, spokesperson for the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, on Monday.
