In an era marked by growing environmental concerns and a fight to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Novelis has announced its progress to advance sustainability in aluminum rolling and recycling.

The Atlanta-based company unveiled its sustainability report for the 2023 fiscal year spanning from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023.

“I am very proud of our achievements this year, particularly our emissions reduction and recycled content numbers,” said Steve Fisher, president and CEO, Novelis, in a statement.

One of the progress achievements highlighted in Novelis' sustainability report is its progress in reducing carbon emissions. Novelis set a target to slash absolute carbon emissions by 30 percent by the year 2026, benchmarked against its fiscal year 2016 baseline.  In the 2023 fiscal year, the company achieved a 14 percent reduction in emissions across scopes 1, 2, and 3.

“We believe that maximizing aluminum’s circularity is the most effective way to decarbonize, and Novelis is leading the industry on that front by expanding closed-loop recycling partnerships with customers, investing in additional recycling capacity, and creating new alloys and processing methods to increase our use of recycled metal inputs," Fisher said.

In addition to working toward absolute CO2 reduction and recycling, Novelis’ sustainability report highlights its progress in other areas. The report notes that Novelis has decreased carbon emissions intensity by 17 percent from the FY2016 baseline; reduced waste to landfill intensity by 10 percent from the FY2020 baseline; and Novelis donated $7.5 million to charitable causes.

Another aspect of Novelis' sustainability strategy is the integration of recycled aluminum into its products. In the 2023 fiscal year, Novelis achieved 61 percent recycled content across its global product lines.

The company also recycled  2.3 million tonnes of aluminum. Moreover, the company's recycling initiatives led to the recovery of over 82 billion used beverage cans.

Lastly, the sustainability report mentions that Novelis became a strategic partner of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a nonprofit that introduces students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade to the world of engineering, coding, and robotics.
