New York's Plastic Bag Ban Goes into Effect
October 19, 2020
New York's Bag Waste Reduction Law goes into effect on Monday, Oct. 19. following a six-month delay.
The ban on single-use plastic bags at supermarkets, delis, and superstores is aimed at reducing the number of bags that are used across the state each year, which is estimated at 23 billion.
Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the piece of legislation into law on Earth Day in 2019. Months of litigation pushed back the enforcement date. Bodega and Small Business Association challenged the ban, calling it "unconstitutional and inconsistent."
Enforcement of the law was originally pushed bag twice because of the COVID-19 pandemic, when scientists were concerned about virus transmission. When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that plastic bags weren't a carrier for the virus, officials pushed to move enforcement forward.
