Mattress Recycling Fees on the Rise in Springfield, Mo. Due to Increased Operating Costs

Recycling fees will be increasing for mattresses at recycling drop-off sites starting next year due to rising operational costs.

Recycling fees will be increasing for mattresses at recycling drop-off sites starting next year due to rising operational costs.

On January 2, fees for mattress recycling will increase from $15 to $20 as operational costs for the service continue to rise.

“As with many things, the cost of operating and providing mattress recycling services has gone up,” explains Superintendent of Solid Waste Dan Jessen. “Mattresses not only require a lot of processing to break down the different recyclable elements but there’s also the transportation and equipment involved in moving items from the city’s sites to the processing facility.”

The Springfield, Mo. mattress recycling program started in 2018 to address the challenges involved in disposing of bulky items. More than 12,000 mattresses have been collected at recycling sites since the program’s introduction.
