Lawmakers Tackle Chemical Recycling of Plastics

Government officials in Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina and West Virginia have recently joined 14 other states in advancing chemical recycling.

With reports that less than 10 percent of plastic making its way to a recycling process, environmental advocates are questioning the practices and working to reduce the use of single-use plastics.

They argue that chemical recycling is too "energy intensive" and generates too much pollution to be beneficial. In the industry, some are working toward classifying chemical recycling as manufacturing and not a solid waste process.
