Atlanta –- A judge has ruled that the Live Oak Landfill close in December 2004. The landfill accepts approximately 4,500 tons per day, a majority of the metro area’s refuse. Last year, then-Gov. Roy Barnes ordered the site closed. However, Mayor Shirley Franklin has asked that Live Oak remain open until other disposal options can be investigated. The challenge for the city is where will its trash go once the facility closes. The landfill’s owner, Houston-based Waste Management Inc. may try to appeal the judge’s ruling.
