Tyler Landfill Could Turn Trash Into Fuel

The city of Tyler’s landfill could be used to generate electricity and produce synthetic fuels.

The City Council on Wednesday approved a memorandum of understanding with the University of Texas at Tyler and the Arrington Corporation, a consulting group of chemical engineers, to explore building a biomass gasification facility at the city’s landfill.

A number of biomass gasificiation facilities are being built around the country. They break down biomass in a high-heat, low-oxygen environment, producing a synthetic gas that can be used as a fuel for electricity.
