Star Tops Lake View Landfill in Erie County, Pa. for More Than 30 Holiday Seasons

Bill Kuhn, operations manager at the Lake View Landfill in Erie County, Pa., remembers the first time a Christmas star was placed on the site.

The idea, he says, came from an operations manager in 1993. Ever since then, residents and passersby call in every holiday season to ask if the star will burn brightly.

The star measures 17 feet by 17 feet and sits on top of a pile 1,500 feet high. The landfill is owned and managed by WM (Waste Management).
