For more than a year in the early 1970s, an Anoka County landfill was permitted to collect hazardous waste before it was shut down for operator misconduct.
The Waste Disposal Engineering Landfill in Andover is 122 acres and located south of Coon Creek, north of the Andover Station North ball fields, east of Crosstown Boulevard and a residential neighborhood, and on the opposite side of Hanson Boulevard from another neighborhood.
The dump opened in 1962 in what was then Grow Township and stopped accepting waste in 1983, then in the city of Andover. There were 66 acres of waste within the 122-acre property, according to Minnesota Pollution Control Agency data.
