New Landfill to Be Built in Canyon, Minnesota

A new $70 million facility will be built in Canon, Minn., following the approval of country commissioners.

The 800-acre campus will be modeled after a landfill in Virginia. Waste Management, who manages the current landfill on the site, is expected to receive the contract for the new project.

The new landfill will provide leachate and PFAS mediation to ensure chemicals are not dumped into Lake Superior. Leachate is an issue in the state, and screening out PFAS in water is crucial.

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, which hasn’t permitted a new municipal solid-waste landfill since 1993, according to The Duluth News Tribune.
