The Ellis County Landfill located in Kansas has completed and opened a new construction and demolition pit.

Back in 2020, the Ellis County Landfill purchased the land for the expansion. During that time, construction began, and officials sought out to obtain permits. The construction of the expansion was completed entirely by Ellis County employees, saving more than $100,000 for the Solid Waste budget.

The new area is projected to last about eight years with future expansions being planned currently. The construction is split into two sections, a north half and south half. Currently, dumping is open in the southern area until it reaches capacity. Then, dumping will begin in the northern half.

Materials that will be accepted at the construction and demolition pit include concrete, wood, drywall, roofing materials, bricks, fiberglass, and other construction and demolition debris.

Tipping fees will run users $45 per ton and come with a $10 minimum starting at 440 pounds or less.
