EGG-cellent Community Turn Out for the Shotwell Landfill Earth Day Easter Egg Hunt

Raleigh, N.C.– Meridian Waste, an integrated, non-hazardous solid waste services company, celebrated an Earth Day-themed event on Saturday, April 9 with more than 600 neighbors and community members from Wake, Johnston, other neighboring counties at the Shotwell Landfill, soon to be renamed Shotwell Environmental Park, 4724 Smithfield Road in Wendell, NC.

The day’s festivities started with outdoor activities including an inflatable obstacle course and a bounce house, Meridian Waste’s signature Touch-A-Truck field, egg painting, face painting, and outdoor games.  Hayride tours of the construction and demolition debris landfill were additional activities and helped citizens understand the need for recycling and disposal facilities. And that well-run disposal facilities can be clean and green while providing a vital infrastructure asset to the community.

Free lunch and shaved ice complimented the 1,200-egg Easter Egg Hunt. The hunt fields were divided into three age groups from two to four years of age, five to seven years of age, and eight to 10 years of age for safety and fairness purposes. In each field, ten hand-painted Earth Eggs were hidden, and each lucky child who found an egg received a special prize. All egg hunt participants received an Earth-themed Easter bag complete with wildflower seeds, candy, bubbles, and information about Meridian Waste’s national Earth Day Coloring Contest. “Welcoming our neighbors to Shotwell is something that we truly love to do,” said Josh Daher, Area President for Meridian Waste in North Carolina.  “Building trust within the community is important to our team of solid waste professionals while ensuring timely and environmentally safe collection, recycling and disposal of the waste materials we manage,” he said.  “We are proud to be called garbage men and ladies, and it’s exciting to see our youngest community members and their parents equally as excited about our trucks, landfill equipment, and fun-filled events. The event helped to change the perspective some have about the solid waste business, especially disposal sites.  Meridian Waste and the solid waste industry keep our communities clean and we believe that it can be fun, too.”

Shotwell Landfill hosts multiple community events each year at its facility.  For more information about future family-friendly events, visit Facebook.com/MeridianWaste.
