The former Longman landfill site is now home to families of badgers. With the construction of a new waste-handling plant, the badgers have been disrupted, however, not without some protective measures pushback. The animal is a protected species and therefore has been allotted regular monitoring by an ecologist and a 32-foot exclusion zone. Due to both these measures and a rise in the cost of building materials, the cost of the project has risen to £14m.
