Three weeks after a fire caused smoke to engulf the country's capital, Serbia has shut down its landfill.
The landfill is the largest in Europe, measuring 10.5 miles. Poor maintenance of the landfill, which is located near the Danube river, regularly caused fires.
The site accepted 1,500 tonnes of household waste and 3,000 tonnes of construction waste every day.
In 2019, Serbia began construction of a new landfill and a waste-to-energy incinerator. This was part of the country's efforts to join the European Union.
