At age 10, EIA’s Women’s Council plans 2013 events to educate and entertain.

EIA: Anniversary Party

The Environmental Industry Associations’ (EIA) Women’s Council (WC), whose purpose is to foster the professional development of women in the solid waste and recycling industry, is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2013. In its first 10 years, the Women’s Council has hosted many educational events and provided $77,500 in scholarships to students pursuing a career in the environmental industry. The WC will be celebrating its anniversary with events throughout the year, including an invitation-only celebratory reception at WasteExpo.

“This is a huge accomplishment and a very exciting time for our organization,” said Jeanie Dubinski, chief legal officer at Waste Pro USA and 2013 WC president. “I’m extremely proud to be part of this group that provides top-notch education, mentoring and networking opportunities, all in the name of advancing professional development.”

New Council Leadership

The WC membership elected its 2013 board at the EIA Executive Roundtable Conference in October. The officers are: President, Jeanie Dubinski (Waste Pro USA); Vice Chair, Mary Margaret Cowhey (Land & Lakes Co.); Treasurer, Jean Bredbenner (Republic Services); and Secretary/Membership Care, Brenda Westover (Waste Pro USA). In addition, the WC elected the following committee chairs: 10th Anniversary (Dubinski and Cowhey), Scholarship (Cowhey), Marketing (Laura Hubbard of Toter), and Education (Terri Ricketts of IESI/Progressive Waste).

2013-2014 Scholarship Program

The application deadline for the 2013-2014 scholarship program is March 15. Applicants for the WC educational scholarships must be either employed by, or be the By Peggy Macenas, EIA Women’s Council Manager dependents of persons employed by, a member company of either the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) or Waste Equipment Technology Association (WASTEC). Subject to available funding and the decision of the WC Executive Committee, multiple scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each will be awarded for the 2013-2014 academic year. Upcoming Educational Events

The WC hosted a no-cost Lunch & Learn webinar, “Sustainable Landfill Leachate Management with Treatment Wetlands (biofilters)” on January 10. Steve Apfelbaum, founder and principal ecologist for Applied Ecological Services, presented his experiences in using treatment wetlands (biofilters) at landfills and other properties.

In addition, the WC is pleased to announce the EIA WC Living Legends Box Lunch to be held at WasteExpo in New Orleans, on May 20, 2013. Scheduled to speak at the event are Scott Dols, president & CEO of Big Truck Rental, and Charlie Appleby, CEO of Advanced Disposal.

WasteExpo Events

The popular Carts on Parade is back in 2013! A parade of decorated carts will be on display in the WasteExpo exhibit hall. Carts may be sponsored by an individual or company and will be judged on creativity and effective use of one of the themes. Entry forms must be submitted by March 15. Also back by popular demand is the WC Boutique, which provides environmentally friendly shopping for WasteExpo attendees. Items available for purchase will include “Got Trash?” t-shirts and bags made from recycled materials.

“Where Does My Garbage Go?” Coloring Book

April 22 is Earth Day. There is no better way to honor the environment than by educating the next generation about the waste industry. The WC coloring book is available in English and Spanish, and can be personalized with your company’s logo.
