Strategic Materials Demonstrates Sustainable Glass Recycling in 2022

North America's largest glass recycler, Strategic Materials, Inc. (SMI), unveiled its 2022 sustainability report, highlighting significant achievements and ongoing efforts in environmental stewardship for glass recycling.

The report is organized to address key areas of people, partners, and planet, reflecting stakeholder priorities across various aspects of sustainability.

SMI's sustainability report encompasses an extensive range of topics, including health and safety, ethics and integrity, diversity, equity and inclusion, product quality, waste diversion, and greenhouse gas emissions. The company's commitment to these critical areas has been acknowledged and lauded by industry experts and stakeholders alike.

"We've come a long way in a short period of time," said Laura Hennemann, senior vice president of sustainability and corporate affairs at SMI, in a statement. "We are a cleaner and more committed company, and our work is making a meaningful impact."

SMI demonstrated its dedication to waste diversion by successfully diverting a staggering 4.07 billion pounds of material from landfills. This notable achievement showcases the company's vital role in promoting the circular economy and reducing environmental strain.

 The report documents the tracking and reporting of Scope 1 & 2 GHG inventory, with reductions of 2,953 MT CO2e and 862 MT CO2e, respectively, compared to the previous year. These reductions underscore SMI's commitment to mitigating its carbon footprint and driving towards a more sustainable future.

SMI has significantly increased its charitable contributions, showcasing its dedication to giving back to the communities it operates in. The company's five-fold increase in charitable contributions over the past two years demonstrates its commitment to social responsibility.

Ensuring a safe work environment for its employees is a top priority for SMI. The report indicates that an impressive 78.3% of SMI facilities achieved zero recordable injuries. Furthermore, the company's total recordable incident rate (TRIR) decreased to 1.77, significantly lower than the industry average of 4.

Maintaining high product quality standards is crucial for SMI. The report states that the company maintained an outstanding 99.95 percent product quality acceptance rate, ensuring that recycled glass continues to meet industry standards and expectations.
