The Corangamite Shire Council in Australia has introduced new recycling bins for glass jars and bottles, helping residents to recycle correctly.

The recycling bins are designed to be taller than previous bins and to achieve high-value glass collection. These new bins and other initiatives will help the Corangamite Shire Council fulfill the new Recycling Victoria state legislation that calls for separating glass materials by 2027.

The state government funded the $320,000 upgrade project through the Department of Energy, Environment, and Climate Action Transfer Station Upgrade Fund.

“This hasn’t been a small task by any means. If people don’t help by doing the right thing, we’ll wind up with a downgraded product,” said Jamie Vogels, Corangamite Shire councilor.

“Cradle to cradle describes the circulation of materials in a continuous circular economy. In this case ‘cradle to cradle’ means glass bottles and jars getting recycled into new bottles and jars.”

“As a council, we’re aiming high, and we just need to bring the community along with us.”
