Columbus, OH has opened three of the five planned food-waste composting drop-off locations, where residents can dispose of food waste for free.

Mayor Andrew J. Ginther announced late last year that the city would open these spots where residents can dispose of leftover and spoiled food, for free, hoping to keep food waste out of landfills. The city plans to open the remaining two facilities sometime later this year.

“These drop-off facilities will make it more convenient for residents to sustainably dispose of and compost food waste,” Mayor Ginther said in a prepared statement this week. “This new city service strengthens our continued efforts to provide disposal options that advance our commitment to reduce landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions for a healthier, cleaner climate for all Columbus residents.”

The three sites currently open can be found at Anheuser Busch Sports Park, Dodge Park and Community Center, and Scioto Southland Park. The remaining two Waste and Reuse Convenience Centers are planned to open later this year at the city Division of Refuse Collection’s Alum Creek Transfer Station and the Georgesville Road Transfer Station.

The last two sites will accept garbage, bulk items, recyclables, yard waste, and other hard to manage trash in addition to food waste.

The city’s new facilities aim to help decrease nearly one million pounds of food waste from being dumped at the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill every day.
