Pittsburgh is the latest city to join the Food Matters Regional Initiative aimed at reducing food waste.

The no-cost program has been launched in nine other cities including Atlanta; Ashville, NC; Baltimore; Jersey City, NJ; Memphis, TN; Nashville; Orlando, Fla.; Philadelphia; and Washington DC.

The collaborative aims to reduce waste through "prevention, food rescue, and recycling of food scraps." The city of Pittsburgh is partnering with local nonprofit Sustainable Pittsburgh to get the wheels moving. City officials cite the move as part of its zero-waste goals.

Non-profit Natural Resources Defense Council  (NRDC) is spearheading the Food Matters project, working with each city and key officials "to estimate their baseline food waste generation and rescue potential and to provide technical assistance on developing food waste strategies that help bolster their broader food systems, sustainability, and climate goals."
