McNeilus Brings Nine Vehicles and 25 Years of Refuse Service and Innovation to WasteExpo 2016

McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing brought 25 years of service and innovation to WasteExpo 2016 in Las Vegas.

Celebrating 25 years in the refuse industry, the company will showcase two McNeilus vehicles in booth #1402 – a restored PacStar Rear Loader and an enhanced Meridian Front Loader – as well as an IMT Dominator mechanics truck. Six additional McNeilus vehicles will be featured in partner booths throughout the tradeshow.

“Twenty-five years ago McNeilus entered the market with the PacStar Rear Loader, much like the one we’ll have on display,” said Brad Nelson, president, McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing, Inc., and Oshkosh Corporation’s Commercial Segment. “During those 25 years we’ve carefully listened to our customers, constantly improving our products and services to exceed their expectations in uptime and performance. Today, our dedicated, direct-to-you sales and support network has grown to include international sales and support.”

At the time of its introduction in 1991, the PacStar Rear Loader set new benchmarks for durability and reliability. The PacStar model on display at the booth, which features a chassis restored by Nuss Truck, hauled 17,621,920 pounds of trash over 87,022 miles in its lifetime. This original workhorse of the McNeilus fleet evolved into the McNeilus Standard Rear Loader and other innovative models that today account for McNeilus sales of more than 24,000 rear loaders.

Gary Husseman of Rockville (Indiana) Trash Removal was the original owner of the restored PacStar, soon after it came out of production. And, he stayed with the McNeilus brand throughout his 26 years in the industry.

“McNeilus packers just perform better than anything else,” said Husseman. “I just like the McNeilus packers better. I’ve never had any major problems with them. They pack all the trash you want them to.”

The McNeilus booth will also feature the innovative and enhanced Meridian Front Loader, which balances a high payload with lower body weight for advanced hauling performance on commercial and residential routes. The truck is an industry leader in durability with a 14-ton carrying capacity. The clear headframe improves accessibility and serviceability, and relocation of hydraulic and electrical components prevents contact with hot exhaust and debris.

The Meridian design also includes 10,000-pound-rated arms, side-of-body electric over hydraulic valves for better control and smoother operation and the largest available hopper access door.
McNeilus’ Street Smart brand will be another primary booth feature, showcasing a dedicated, factory-direct sales and support network. With nearly 30 strategically located North American branches and service centers, local customer support is available before, during and after the sale. McNeilus customers can take advantage of flexible in-house financing options, trade-in and used equipment opportunities, along with a national service team that provides on-site product and service training.

The Street Smart Parts™ display will highlight the 24/7/365 availability of quality OEM parts and parts for any make or model. Street Smart Service™ also offers 24/7 technical support over the phone, and certified technicians are on-call in local service centers to repair or refurbish any make or model. The Street Smart by McNeilus brand also offers solution-based programs and options, such as:

Finally, a McNeilus Atlantic Series Front Loader that features a 40-cubic-yard capacity, 10,000-pound-rated arms, Excalibre™ packing cylinders, LED fender lights, hopper work light and camera assist lights, service lift and camera system will be part of a live auction at the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) booth on Wednesday, June 8 at 4 p.m. The auction generates funds to assist the EREF’s scientific research and educational initiatives for sustainable waste management practices.

Mack Trucks to Evaluate Wrightspeed Route Powertrain in Mack LR Model

Mack Trucks showcased a Mack LR model retrofitted with the Wrightspeed Route 1000 powertrain in its booth at WasteExpo 2016. Mack is the first OEM to evaluate Wrightspeed technology within a Class 8 refuse vehicle.

Designed as an alternative driveline, the Wrightspeed Route is a range-extended electric vehicle powertrain that helps reduce fuel consumption and vehicle maintenance costs.

“Mack is the refuse industry leader because we’re constantly seeking to pioneer new ideas and innovations,” said Dennis Slagle, president of Mack Trucks. “It’s something we’ve done throughout our 116-year history, and it’s something we will continue to do. Wrightspeed shares this pioneering spirit, which is why we’re eager to evaluate their Route powertrain technology.”

The Wrightspeed Route powertrain uses electricity to deliver 100 percent of the vehicle’s propulsion. The system features an advanced plug-in-capable battery pack that enables a purely electric range of up to 24 miles. When the batteries’ charge is depleted, an 80 kW, fuel agnostic Fulcrum Turbine Generator, which can operate on natural gas or diesel fuel, recharges the batteries, enabling Route-equipped vehicles to have unlimited range with refueling.

Additional recharging comes from the Route’s 730 kW regenerative braking system, which generates electricity as the vehicle comes to a stop. Regenerative braking helps Route-equipped vehicles to cut down on maintenance costs, as braking force – and subsequent brake wear – is significantly decreased.

Electricity from the battery pack powers four Geared Traction Drive™ (GTD) electric motors, enabling the Route powertrain to power vehicles up to 66,000 pounds on grades as steep as 40 percent. With full torque available from zero rpm, the Route provides a driving experience comparable to diesel-powered trucks.

The Mack LR model equipped with the Wrightspeed Route powertrain will be on display in Mack booth no. 1327 throughout WasteExpo 2016, which runs June 7-9 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Caterpillar Works with M2 Industries to Expand Range of Rebuilt and Refurbished Landfill Compactor Wheels

Caterpillar has developed an exclusive agreement with M2 Industries, LLC to provide rebuilt and refurbished landfill compactor wheels. The agreement enables Cat dealers to offer a wider range of high quality, cost competitive options for all models of Cat landfill compactors.

M2 Industries, LLC, based in Jeffersonville, Indiana, is a leading provider of rebuilt/refurbished compactor wheels. The company’s experienced staff brings solid understanding of compaction applications to the rebuild process.

In the past, Caterpillar offered a limited selection of rebuilt wheels, and rebuilds included new outer wrappers and new tips. The license agreement expands the number of configurations of rebuilt wheels and adds the option of replacing tips without replacing the outer wrapper. Of course the retip-only option extends the life of the wheel at a lower cost.

The rebuilt/refurbished compactor wheel program requires a core exchange and does not offer an option to order a wheel without providing a core. For further information, contact your local Cat dealer.

Wastequip’s Go To Parts Division Introduces Its Dealer Network

Dennis Eagle to Preview Their New Low Entry Vocational Chassis Designed for North American Urban Environments at WasteExpo

Dennis Eagle, one of the leading European refuse chassis and body manufacturers, unveiled its US designed Elite chassis at WasteExpo. The 6X4 chassis features one of the lowest entry cabs in the industry and a uniquely unobstructed walk through cab floor – allowing full movement by the driver in the cab.

The vehicle clearly represents Dennis Eagle’s commitment to performance and safety.

Powered by the proven Cummins ISL9 345 bhp engine and the Allison 3000 RDS series transmission, the vehicle is designed to operate in the toughest urban conditions in any North American city. The vehicle will meet the most stringent emission requirements. ABS 4-channel braking is standard. Steering is almost effortless with an integrally-powered recirculating ball system.

The cab is designed with safety very much in mind. It features Cromwell stainless steel construction and GRP molded roof, wings and front grill. Cab tilting is assisted through an electrically operated cab tilt mechanism. Driver visibility is unsurpassed with the chassis’ low seating and huge panoramic windows.

The cab is fully trimmed and features driver’s air suspension seat, crew seat, 3-point seatbelts, electric windows, and tinted glass . Air conditioning is standard.

In addition to the chassis on display in booth 4508 , Dennis Eagle has partnered with Heil Corporation to display a second chassis featuring a Heil 25 cubic yard DPF5000 Rear Loader Body in the outdoor display area of WasteExpo

The show vehicles are dual steer which highlights the unique benefits of the walk through cab floor. These two vehicles will be available for demonstration during the second half of 2016.

A number of pre-production units with the final and fully Americanized specification will be available in the first half of 2017 for further demonstrations and testing. Delivery of the first US assembled units is expected from the middle of 2017 onwards. Dennis Eagle will be offering left hand steer and dual steer versions, both diesel and CNG and a variety of seat configurations (Driver plus 2 etc).

The Dennis Eagle Elite chassis will be supported by industry leading sales and service organizations – selected based on their knowledge and expertise of the industry and ability to exceed customers’ expectations for sales and service support.

SWANA & NGVAmerica Partner to Develop Best Practices for
Natural Gas-Powered Refuse Vehicles

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) and Natural Gas Vehicles for America (NGVAmerica) announce their collaboration to develop a new safety and best practices guide for fueling and maintaining natural gas powered refuse trucks. The document will provide the latest information used by fleets for safely operating collection and transfer vehicles that run on clean-burning and affordable natural gas.

SWANA’s executive director and CEO, David Biderman said, “SWANA is very pleased to be working with NGVAmerica on this important project. NGVAmerica is the leading association working to promote the use of natural gas refuse vehicles, and SWANA is the largest association for the waste and recycling sector in North America, and we both have a strong commitment to safety. By working together and take advantage of each association’s expertise, we expect the guidance document will provide critical information for members of both associations and others in the waste and recycling industry.” Biderman added that SWANA and NGVA worked together last year on federal advocacy issues relating to the tax treatment of natural gas-fueled vehicles.

NGVA’s president, Matthew Godlewski, said, “The refuse segment continues to be a strong growth driver in America’s fleet of natural gas vehicles. Communities are demanding cleaner, quieter, more cost-effective options for the refuse vehicles running through their neighborhoods and natural gas delivers the best option. NGVAmerica’s Technology and Development Committee is leading the collaborative effort with SWANA. The committee is comprised of over 70 NGV industry stakeholders who work together to improve safety and maintenance issues, further codes and standards development, and the promote the latest innovation to improve the NGV experience for fleets and consumers.
