Volvo CE Achieves Zero-Landfill Status at its Shippensburg, PA Facility

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE), a leading manufacturer of construction machinery, has earned zero-landfill status at its facility in Shippensburg, Pa. 

The 838,342-sq.-ft. site employees more than 800 people on 192 acres and began the journey to zero landfill in 2012, with improved recycling processes. “By 2016, the site had implemented composting of pre-kitchen waste, wood pallet recycling, plastic foam and rubber scrap recycling and eliminated one trash compactor that was designated for landfill disposal.” And by the end of 2018, all waste from the Shippensburg site had been fully diverted from landfills. Over six years, the site saw its waste handling costs decrease by more than 50 percent.

An internal group known as the Volvo Core Values team managed the zero-landfill transition in coordination with employees who they empowered “to make good decisions and do the right things”—leading to a sense of shared success. Rich Halter, safety and environmental manager, also notes that, “The transition was supported by our waste service provider, Waste Management.”

Volvo CE aims to make several additional sites landfill-free by 2025 and all production sites landfill-free by 2030.
