BURLINGTON, ONTARIO Anaergia Inc. (“Anaergia” or the “Company”) (TSX: ANRG) announced it has been named a finalist in two categories of the 2023 Global Water Awards, the prominent international water industry awards program administered by publisher Global Water Intelligence. The company is a finalist for Net Zero Carbon Champion, and its project for the Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority is a finalist for Wastewater Project of the Year.

The Global Water Awards recognized the environmental benefits of Anaergia’s projects that allow wastewater plants to co-digest food scraps and other organic waste with sludge, producing enough carbon-negative biomethane to completely eliminate a plant’s carbon footprint. The Net Zero Carbon Champion award is for companies whose products and services have done the most to reduce the carbon emissions of their customers in 2022. The program also noted the company’s role as a complete lifecycle-solutions partner for wastewater facilities, offering a full array of technologies as well as services such as project financing and operations. In addition, the awards program highlighted the growth of Anaergia’s portfolio of plants that are converting waste into carbon negative fuel globally.

Among the projects Anaergia commissioned in 2022 is a finalist for Wastewater Project of the Year, a state-of-the-art co-digestion and biogas upgrading facility operating at Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority’s (VVWRA) wastewater treatment plant in Victorville, California. The facility converts 235,000 tons a year of waste and sludge into 320,000Mmbtu of biomethane, and is North America’s largest privately financed co-digestion-to-biomethane for pipeline injection at a wastewater treatment plant. By co-digesting off-site waste, the plant makes VVWRA a regional champion for waste reduction even beyond its own wastewater responsibilities. The project was designed, built, operated, and financed by Anaergia through its subsidiary SoCal Biomethane in partnership with VVWRA and North Sky Capital.

“It’s an honor to be named as one of four companies globally that are leading the transition to net zero carbon in the water sector,” said Andrew Benedek, Anaergia’s Chairman and CEO. “For several decades Anaergia has been helping cities, utilities and industries decarbonize by converting their waste into carbon-negative fuel and diverting organics from landfill disposal. Our facilities help reduce methane emissions at scale and make net zero possible around the globe every day.”

The Global Water Awards will be presented during the Global Water Summit in Berlin, Germany on May 9th.
