Toter, North Carolina University Partner for Zero Waste at Stadium

Waste and recycling cart provider Toter is working with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) to achieve a zero waste goal at its new stadium.

UNCC purchased 22 Toter Fan Cans for recyclables and 22 Toter litter containers for compostable materials for use in Jerry Richardson football stadium, the Statesville, N.C.-based unit of Wastequip LLC said in a news release.

Toter customized each cart with UNCC’s colors, and created replicas of the UNCC football helmet for the Fan Cans.

UNCC created the zero-waste initiative with a student resolution, and has student volunteers standing by carts at every home game to explain which items should be composted and recycled.

To help achieve the zero-waste initiative, UNCC requires Chartwells, their university dining service, to package all food items in materials that are either recyclable or compostable.

The university’s zero-waste efforts with Toter have significantly increased the amount of waste diverted from landfills at NCC home games. In the first home game, UNCC reported 62.6 percent of their overall stadium waste was diverted from the landfill. During more recent games, as much as 93.9 percent of waste was diverted from the landfill.
