Potential to Turn Rikers Island Into a Green Energy Hub

After jailing ends on Rikers Island in 2027, there are several ideas for what the land could be used for in the future.

In 2021 the New York City Council ordered jailing on Rikers Island to be shut down by 2027. Due to this, numerous different ideas have been discussed for the use of the island, one of which is a way for the city to offset its large emissions budget. Land near New York City does not become available very often, makingĀ it a very large decision on what to do with it; however, with enough space for a landfill, wastewater treatment facility, and waste-to-energy system this green hub seems like a promising prospective use of the area.
