Last week, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) held a public hearing on the provisional decision the state agency issued to permit Wheelabrator Saugus to place the ash generated from its waste-to-energy facility in two valleys of an adjacent landfill.
While some people are for the project, others are raising concerns because the landfill is unlined and Wheelabrator “lacks the required groundwater monitoring and reporting that is needed to determine whether the contamination from the landfill is spreading into the environment and into our neighborhoods,” Saugus Board of Selectmen Chairman Debra Panett wrote in a letter from the board to the DEP.
The DEP is accepting public comments on the provisional decision until Friday, January 12, 2018.

Numerous residents and environmental activists asked the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to reconsider a provisional decision that would allow Wheelabrator Saugus to fill in two valleys of its existing landfill with ash — while other speakers commended Wheelabrator for its creation of a wildlife sanctuary and support of the community.
Close to 200 people gathered at the Saugus High School auditorium Nov. 30 for a MassDEP public hearing on the provisional decision the state agency issued to permit Wheelabrator to place ash generated from the burning of trash in its incinerator in two valleys of an adjacent landfill.
Wheelabrator has projected that changing the grading of the slopes in the two valleys will provide five years of additional life to the ash landfill.
