Washtenaw County, Mich. Plans for Carbon Neutrality by 2035

The Western Washtenaw Recycling Center processed 4,025 recycling containers last year which equates to roughly 141,000 cubic yards of materials.

“Washtenaw County [Michigan] is looking to become carbon neutral by 2023,” Marc Williams, Facility Manager for WWRA said. “They are taking a lot of steps to reach that goal.”

Last December, the Board of Commissioners adopted the Resilient Washtenaw plan, an aggressive strategy to help achieve carbon neutrality for Washtenaw’s governmental organization by 2030 and the entire county by 2035.

“In the past couple of years, the state has tried to increase the recycling rate,” Williams continued. “They’ve made opportunities for recycling authorities to increase collection methods, education, and processors and find new uses for recycling.”

According to Williams, Michigan’s recycling rates are at an all time high, increasing 5 percent (from 14.25 to 19.3 percent).
