Stef Talks Trash

Episode 13: Plastic Succs with Succulent Studios

Houseplants have been the latest trend with Millennials and Gen Z, who have latched onto the low-cost, low-maintenance hobby.

In fact, 18- to 34-year-olds occupy 29% of all gardening households, according to a National Gardening Survey. The trend skyrocketed as COVID-19 shutdown the nation, leading to an uptick in e-commerce orders for rare plants and succulents.

The market for succulents reached an estimated $3.2 billion in 2019 and is estimated to reach more than $8.5 billion by 2027, according to market research. With the increase in online orders comes an increase in plastic waste, something consumers - especially those more in tune with nature - are looking to ditch.

Melissa Murphy, the CEO of Succulent Studios, joins Editorial Director Stefanie Valentic for this episode of Stef Talks Trash. Murphy will tell us about how her monthly subscription business got started and the challenges she faced with obtaining sustainable packaging solutions.
