California Mattress Recycling Bill Advances

California’s mattress recycling bill has been approved by a committee as it moves toward a vote on approval.

California’s Assembly Natural Resources Committee unanimously approved SB 254, according to a news release. The bill now moves to the Assembly Appropriations Committee and then to the Assembly floor for approval.

The bill would create a used mattress recycling program that will have a dedicated funding mechanism, reduce the impact of illegally dumped mattresses, take advantage of existing infrastructure for transporting used mattresses to recyclers, create jobs and minimize costs to government and consumers.

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Loni Hancock, Berkeley, and Sen. Lou Correa, Santa Ana.

The bill is similar to mattress recycling laws passed in Rhode Island and Connecticut. It is supported by the Alexandria, Va.-based International Sleep Products Association.
