After the shift to single-stream recycling two years ago, the amount of recycled material in La Crosse and Onalaska has more than doubled, but experts are still looking for improvement.
Single-stream recycling simplifies the process and allows residents and businesses to put all recyclable material in the same cart.
Henry Koch, director of the La Crosse County Solid Waste Department, said while the communities were concerned about the change at first, they've now embraced the change.
"The two cities did a great educational effort," said Koch, referring to La Crosse and Onalaska. "Now I hear people saying, 'Don't take my cart away from me. We love this program.'"
