JB Straubel has decided to step back from his daily role as Tesla's CTO to focus on an issue that has been "still missing from the puzzle: closed loop battery recycling."

The "backbone" behind the electric automobile manufacturer's battery technology addressed this at the 2018 Annual Shareholders Meeting, saying Tesla's concerns "lie in recycling its batteries, thereby preventing the company’s old cells from ending up in landfills." The company wants to reuse old materials in new battery packs.

As a result, Straubel has launched a startup, Redwood Materials, to develop a closed loop battery recycling system. Another Tesla alumni, Andrew Stevenson, is joining him in this venture.
