An unprecedented number of Holland residents this year have unpaid garbage fees totaling nearly $250,000. City leaders are taking an unusual step to collect the money by putting the delinquent payments on the summer property tax bill.
It's Monday before Tulip Time, and some of the flowers are blooming right on time. If only they could set an example for those who owe money on their garbage bills.
"Never in a million years would I have guessed we would have over a thousand people just ignoring, choosing not to pay, their garbage bill," said Cindy Osman, assistant director of Holland Community and Neighborhood Services.
