Charlottesville and Albemarle County officials serving on the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority’s board are considering radical options that could alter respective voting power on the panel or create a new county waste authority.
Since 2011, the city has provided no money to the authority for the Ivy Materials Utilization Center, choosing instead to contract private commercial haulers with their own waste transfer stations. Throughout the prior decade, Charlottesville withheld some money from the authority on the grounds that it is unnecessary for the city to pay tax money for services its residents do not use.
