Former DPW Worker Pleads Guilty in 14-Year Bribery Scheme

A former Baltimore City Department of Public Works employee has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and to solicitation of bribes in connection with a 14-year scheme.

Prosecutors said Tamara Oliver Washington, 55, of Baltimore, pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiracy and to solicitation of bribes for her part in the scheme in which DPW employees sought and accepted cash payments from commercial haulers in return for allowing the commercial haulers to deposit trash at the Quarantine Road Landfill without paying the required disposal fees.

The plea agreement was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein and other officials.

The news comes about two months after a dramatic raid took place when five workers were detained and charged in U.S. District Court with taking bribes and stealing scrap metal back in May.
