The ordinance, which requires certain residents to properly secure their trash, goes into effect on March 1.

Colorado Springs, Colo., is preparing to enforce its bear trash ordinance starting March 1. The new ordinance aims to reduce the number of bears getting into trash cans.

Under the new ordinance, residents west of I-25 will be required to secure their trash in a garage, shed or bear-resistant trash can. Residents also will only be allowed to have their trash outside from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. MT on collection days.

Human trash is killing bears, according to wildlife experts and a new Colorado Springs’ ordinance aims to limit how much it happens.

Starting on Sunday, March 1 people living west of I-25 are required to secure their trash either in a garage, shed or with a bear-resistant trash can.

“It applies to residents, single-family homes, apartments, townhomes, businesses—if you generate trash west of I-25, this code impacts you,” said Mitch Hennes, the neighborhood services manager for the city of Colorado Springs.
