Fresh Kills Landfill Reaches Final Certification in Closure

The transformation of the 2,200-acre plot where Fresh Kills Landfill once operated has reached a milestone.

The site, which opened in 1948 as the world's largest landfill, is set to become the world's largest landfill-to-park project, according to media sources.

New York City has given more than $980 million to the project throughout the years. Capping and continuous monitoring is ongoing at the site.
