In Kenya, a kilogram of recyclable plastic is worth 17 shillings, which is equivalent to about $0.14 USD. Where it is possible to make money, people will do what they must to make ends meet and feed themselves and their families.

In the country, women collect at the dumping sites to sort through discarded trash to find valuable materials, almost always without gloves or protective shoes. About 10,000 women and a few men are subject to numerous treacherous conditions that could have long-term health implications.
