Waste and Recycling Business Named One of the Best Managed Companies in U.S.

Rumpke Waste & Recycling, one of the largest family owned waste and recycling firms in the country, was named one of the 2020 U.S. Best Managed Companies. The award, sponsored by Deloitte Private and The Wall Street Journal, recognizes the best managed private companies in the country.

“Rumpke is thrilled and honored by this national acknowledgement. During these times of uncertainty, this recognition shines a spotlight on our country’s leading private companies, Rumpke is proud to share this award with so many other successful private businesses and to be the only waste and recycling firm to earn this designation,” president and CEO Bill Rumpke Jr., said in a statement.

Nominated by its local Deloitte partner, Cincinnati, Ohio-based Rumpke participated in a rigorous application process that included an independent evaluation of four key management skills – strategy, execution, culture and financials. The company is one of 27 honorees from across the U.S. representing a variety of industries.

“We had to complete a nomination application. Then, Rumpke was selected to move on in the process. At that point, we had to participate in a workshop to discuss award criteria and if and how Rumpke achieves the objectives,” says Amanda Pratt, director of communications for Rumpke. “Lastly, we completed a lengthy application process intensely covering the criteria. It was submitted to an independent panel of judges.”

The Best Managed Companies program is a mark of excellence for private companies. U.S. designees have annual revenues of at least $250 million. Program sponsors include Deloitte Private and The Wall Street Journal.

“This award is another shared achievement of our Rumpke team. It’s one more acknowledgement that the work, expertise and dedication we put forth every day is what ensures our ability to rise to the top. We would like to thank our outstanding, shareholders, Board of Directors and team of more than 3,000 employees for their efforts as well as all those involved in the awards process,” said Rumpke in a statement.

According to Pratt, it was Rumpke’s undaunting perseverance, strong values and a well-defined mission that is clearly communicated and soundly executed that solidified the award.

“I think the great pride and ambition that the Rumpke family has for the business is contagious. Because the Rumpke family learns the business from the frontlines up they understand first-hand the challenges employees face, and they know first-hand what customers want,” she says. “They also have a well-rounded view of the operations. This helps the company strategically plan with accuracy, innovate new solutions, secure business and compete well in the marketplace while attracting and retaining the best experts in the field.”

As a privately owned company, the Rumpke family remains involved in all aspects of the business.

“They listen to new ideas and help build careers and ultimately help families progress. They invest wisely back into the company and truly care about making a positive impact in the communities they service and in the lives of the people they employ,” says Pratt. “They want to grow Rumpke and each generation wants to put its mark of improvement on the business. At the same time, with their last name on every truck and container, they want the Rumpke brand to be known for providing an unmatched gold standard of service to customers, while achieving top notch environmental compliance. Every step that is taken helps drive that mission.”
