An investigation, led by KMBC 9, has led three Kansas City Council members to take action and demand accountability and potential regulation for private waste haulers, attempting to keep them from spilling debris onto area interstates.

According to the investigation, KMBC 9 found that eight of out of nine semi-trucks hauling trash or recycling from Kansas City area waste transfer facilities were responsible for dropping debris onto the highways.

KMBC 9 showed a video to council members, which contained proof that haulers were losing trash all over the road.

“Yeah, this is crazy,” Council member Melissa Robinson said. “I feel bad for you driving. Stuff flying all on your windshield. And then we wonder why we have all the trash.”

Robinson also mentioned that many of the waste haulers are in the third district, which she represents. She continued by mentioning that litter is big problem in the area, and she would support an ordinance to increase host fees for waste haulers that would help pay for litter clean up around the city.
