University of Virginia Repurposes Used Student Furniture

When college students move out of residence halls at the end of the school year, tons of furniture is thrown away and stacked at the landfill.

The University of Virginia's annual Hoos ReUse effort seeks to reduce the amount of furniture waste and make sure it lands at the homes of those who need it. In addition to furniture, clothing, book appliances and items typically found in the living quarters of students are collected and sent to Goodwill to resell.

Refurnished Charlottesville also collaborates with the community to divert items. Since the program was launched in 2010, the university has saved nearly 238,000 pounds of furniture and usable items from the landfill.
