Kane County, Ill., Shifting Garbage from Landfills to Recycle, Recovery Efforts
February 22, 2015
Every month, Kane County Recycles collects four semi-truck loads of electronics. Last year, Kane County residents recycled 413 truckloads of electronic equipment, totaling 11.2 million pounds, Recycles Program Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said.
Electronic recycling is one of the green initiatives Kane County is always working on along with recycling, creating sustainability plans and encouraging residents to rethink recycling.
"We are getting flooded with them and it's because of planned obsolescence," Jarland said. "It's a term used for the way manufacturers make products to break in two years. It's just creating more waste."
Electronics are banned from landfills but Kane County Recycles takes all the 17 items banned including computers, TVs, VCRs, stereos, cell phones and printers. There are different programs to get computers refurbished.
