When it comes to sustainability in the waste management industry, Wastequip — as North America’s leading manufacturer of waste handling equipment — feels a clear responsibility to provide its customers with eco-friendly product options.

But the company’s commitment to sustainable products and practices goes well beyond that. In fact, Wastequip has dedicated itself to leading the way on sustainability and setting new waste-industry standards in the area. The company boasts a family of brands encompassing the companies, touchpoints, scale and collective impact needed to truly make a difference for the industry and the planet.

Of course, the most powerful way to lead is by example — and Wastequip and its family of brands are striving to do just that. Consider these four ways that the Wastequip brand family is blazing a trail toward a greener future in the waste industry — and working to become an all-in-one sustainability resource for the industry’s businesses:

  • The CORE program — Aiming to solidify and formalize its above-mentioned commitments to sustainability and corporate leadership in the waste industry, Wastequip in 2020 launched its CORE (COrporate REsponsibility) program. The program, dedicated to improving the lives of Wastequip brand family employees and the communities in which the brands operate, covers three key pillars:

- People: Wastequip is committed to promoting workforce development and diversity, as well as to actively serving the communities where its brands operate through Wastequip Cares, the company’s volunteerism and charitable giving program.
- Planet: Wastequip is committed to using resources responsibly and to reducing its brands’ carbon footprints.
- Profit: Wastequip is dedicated to maintaining its brands’ financial health, along with their ability to continue supporting causes that help create a brighter future for the waste industry and local communities.

  • Project 25 — As part of the CORE program, Wastequip brand Toter — a national leader in the manufacturing of waste containers, trash cans and dumpsters — has made a big environmental commitment of its own. Toter’s Project 25 initiative outlines the brand’s commitment to reducing the amount of virgin resin used in its entire cart-manufacturing operation by 25%. Virgin resin use represents the most substantial environmental liability in the makeup of Toter’s carts, accounting for over 60% of the carts’ environmental impact. And, according to a 2020 study by Resource Recycling Systems, taking this step will help reduce Toter’s carbon footprint by 9% per cart.

  • EVR-Green — Demonstrating a commitment to meaningful environmental innovation, Toter recently introduced an eco-friendly industry first that brings eco-consciousness to the curbside: the EVR-Green cart. Featuring the waste and recycling industry’s first-ever cart body made from 100% recycled material, the EVR-Green is the most sustainable cart on the market today. And manufactured using Toter’s renowned Advanced Rotational Molding process, the EVR-Green maintains the toughness that Toter is known for — including extreme durability and a long service life, which further contributes to its sustainability.

  • Recycling — Launched in part to support the aforementioned Project 25 and the production of its EVR-Green carts, Toter’s Cart Buy-Back program provides users with a credit for recycling their qualified used carts. In exchange for turning in their old carts via the program, Toter will give users a flat-rate credit per pound on usable material toward their next Toter order.
