German tire manufacturer Continental Tires is teaming up with the University of Aachen to make a more sustainable tire from a common weed: dandelions.
Producing tires from dandelions is part of an effort to "cut back on landfill waste, microplastic pollution, deforestation, and economic shortcomings related to rubber tree cultivation."
This idea is not new; dandelion rubber tires date back to the Soviet Union. The flower is an attractive raw material because it can grow anywhere, including polluted land or industrial parks. In addition, the production process does not produce little if any pollution.
